What Musical Theater Song Should I Sing?
If you’ve ever typed “what musical theater song should I sing?” into Google or ChatGPT, you’re definitely definitely not alone!
This question usually comes up when you have something specific:
- An audition is coming up
- A teacher said “bring a musical theater song next week”
- You know you should update your book… with something..but don’t know where to start
There isn’t one perfect answer — but there is a smarter way to choose so your song actually works for you, not against you! Here are six things to consider when selecting the right musical theater repertoire for you.
1. What Is This Song For?
Before you pick a song, clarify the context.
Is this for:
- A general musical theater audition (like unifieds or for a season)
- A class or coaching session?
- A showcase or cabaret?
- A specific show or casting call?
Musical theater is style-specific. A contemporary pop-rock song may be absolutely perfect for one audition and completely wrong for another. An acting coach I knew laughed (and so did I!) when she told me about the young actress who totally missed the mark when she brought “All That Jazz” to a “Fiddler on the Roof” audition. I mean, seriously? What was she thinking???
General rule:
Choose a song from the same musical era and style as the show you’re auditioning for — unless the notice says otherwise. Something by the same composer is also a smart move. This will better help them visualize you in that show. Your job is to make it easier for them, so do that!
2. What Does Your Voice Actually Do Well?
This is not about your dream role and your “someday”.
It’s about your voice right now.
A solid song choice:
- Sits comfortably in your range (the one you are working with now)
- Highlights what your voice does naturally well, even on a day that’s not so hot
- Doesn’t require survival mode by the final bars
Important reminders:
- Loud ≠ belting
- High ≠ impressive
- Tension is always audible and visible
If you’re working harder than the song, the panel can hear it and see it. Trust me on this one.
3. How Old Do You Read on Stage?
Your casting age and your real age are two very different things, believe it or not.
Ask yourself:
- Do I read youthful, grounded, quirky, authoritative?
- Does this song match the energy people already see from me?
This isn’t about limiting yourself — it’s about choosing material that supports your natural presence instead of fighting it. Own who you are, it will make casting so much easier! Knowing who you are opens more doors.
Honest casting beats aspirational casting every.single.time.
4. Does This Song Show Acting, Not Just Singing?
Musical theater auditions are not vocal recitals. I have talked to many musical theater coaches, and they all say that if they had to pick, they would choose storytelling over flawless vocals every time…truth!
Casting teams are asking:
- Can this person tell a story convincingly?
- Do they make specific choices?
- Are they compelling?
Choose a song that:
- Has a clear arc
- Allows emotional shifts
- Gives you something to work with, not just sing
A simpler song performed truthfully will always beat a vocally flashy song performed without feeling. This is THEATER, after all!
5. Is This Song Overdone or on Autopilot?
Some songs aren’t “bad” — they’re just exhausted.
If your choice feels safe because:
- “Everyone sings it”
- “Someone once told me this works”
- “I’ve always done this one”
…it might be time to reevaluate. STAT.
The goal is for the panel to think:
“Yes. That makes sense for them.”
Not: “I’ve heard this eight times today, and I still hate this song”
Having said THAT! Don’t let “overdone” scare you if YOU feel the piece in your soul, own it, and sing it well.
Years back, I was a little nervous about a young singer bringing “On My Own” to a big vocal competition because…well….it’s “On My Own”!
Buuut..this particular singer was SO right for it, vocally and dramatically. I could see her actually killing it as Eponine. She owned it, and came in 2nd place.
6. Do I Actually LOVE This Piece?
This matters more than people admit. Dare I say it, you have to start HERE, not even from what “sounds good for your voice”.
You don’t have to love the character.
You don’t have to even love the show!
But you do need a genuine connection to the song. Find it.
When singers love a piece:
- Their body and mind relax
- Their phrasing becomes natural
- Their acting choices are intentional and authentic, not forced.
When they don’t, everything becomes careful — and auditions reward commitment, not caution!
A helpful test:
If you wouldn’t sing this song outside of an audition, it might not be the right choice for you.
A song you love will:
- Age better
- Grow with you
- Hold up under nerves and “bad voice days”
Panels can always tell when you’re emotionally invested versus simply being “correct.”
So… What Musical Theater Song Should You Sing?
The right song:
- Fits the audition
- Fits your voice today
- Shows acting and storytelling
- Gets you excited to sing
If choosing feels overwhelming, that’s not a failure — it means you’re taking your craft seriously, as you should!
And yes, this is exactly where a coach can help you stop guessing and start choosing strategically.
