Thinking about taking voice lessons online? Maybe you have been thinking about ‘em for a while….but you might be holding back!
Maybe, it’s because you’re wondering things like :
- Am I too inexperienced?
- Do I need to know how to read music?
- What if I sound terrible?
- What if the teacher asks me to sing something on the spot? What do I sing?
All extremely normal thoughts, by the way! PROMISE!
The good news is that online voice coaching can be a fantastic option for beginners, especially if you want personalized help without driving across town, sitting in traffic, or awkwardly warming up in your car while someone in the next lane watches you lip trill as you’re stopped at a light (lip trills do look and sound totally weird, to be fair!)
First: You Do Not Need to Be “Good Enough” for Voice Lessons
This is one of THE biggest misconceptions beginners have!
You do not take voice lessons because you have already mastered singing. You take voice lessons because you want to learn.
You also do not need to:
- Read music fluently
- Know your vocal range
- Understand vocal anatomy
- Have an insane range
- Belt a high note worthy of Aretha
- Know whether you are a mezzo, soprano, tenor,or baritone
A good voice teacher will meet you where you are and start you where you need to be started.
Your first lesson should not feel like an audition. It should feel like an introduction to your voice and how it works, and how to use it more efficiently.
What Happens in an Online Voice Lesson?
Every teacher works a little differently, but a beginner lesson (with me, anyway!) will usually include some combination of:
- Talking about your goals
- Simple vocal exercises
- Learning how your breathing, balance, and voice work together
- Singing part of a song (if you want! I always always let you choose!)
- Identifying habits that may be making singing harder
- Giving you a few things, just one or two to start, to practice between lessons
No one should expect you to arrive knowing exactly what you are doing.
In fact, beginners are often wonderful to teach because we get to build healthy habits from the beginning instead of trying to untangle years of “I learned this from a random YouTube video”
Can Online Voice Coaching Really Work?
Yes. 100% yes.
A good online teacher can still hear many important things, including:
- Pitch
- Tone quality
- Vocal tension
- Breath coordination
- Registration shifts
- Vowel issues
- Musical phrasing
- Whether you are making singing approximately 400 percent harder than it needs to be
Online lessons also have some real advantages.
You get to sing in your own space. You can record lessons more easily. You do not have to commute. Your pet can offer moral support.
And for nervous beginners, being at home can make the whole experience feel much less intimidating, am I right? I don’t know about you but it’s kinda nerve wracking doing something as personal as singing in a place you’ve never been to before!
You will, however, need a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and enough room to stand comfortably. You do not need a professional recording studio, six microphones, or dramatic mood lighting.
Although dramatic mood lighting is always welcome, ‘cause it makes my job more interesting, too.
And I already mentioned the pets. I love meeting your pets!
Private Coaching, Apps, or Pre-Recorded Courses?
There are a lot of ways to learn singing online now, so you are probably reading this wondering what you should go with.
Some are useful. Some are less useful. Some appear to believe that every vocal problem can be fixed by doing the same hum or slide for seven minutes.
Singing Apps
Apps can be helpful for practicing pitch, rhythm, or basic ear training. So definitely consider getting one for those reasons, some are awesome!
They can also be inexpensive and convenient.
The limitation is that an app does not truly know what your VOICE is doing.
It cannot always tell whether you are singing efficiently, creating unnecessary tension, or pushing. It also can’t suggest songs that suit you.
Pre-Recorded Courses
Courses can be a good introduction to super basic concepts. They allow you to learn at your own pace and revisit lessons whenever you want, which is great.
But again, the material is usually designed for everyone at once.
Your voice is not everyone’s voice. Far from it.
Live Private Coaching
Private coaching gives you real-time feedback based on your individual sound, goals, habits, and experience.
For a beginner, this can save a great deal of time and frustration.
Instead of wondering whether you are doing an exercise correctly, you can ask. Instead of repeating something that is not helping, your teacher can adjust it immediately and find something that does help.
That individual attention is often the biggest difference between making steady progress and spending six months feeling frustrated with chasing video after video on YouTube, only to find nothing is helping.
How Do You Choose the Right Online Voice Coach?
The best online voice coach for a beginner is not necessarily the loudest person on social media, the coach with the most followers, or the person promising the “fastest results”.
Look for someone who:
- Has real teaching experience, not just performing. They’re very different things.
- Understands healthy vocal technique
- Can explain concepts in plain English
- Teaches the style of music you enjoy (SUPER important! Opera coaches can’t always coach pop, and vice versa! Shameless plug: I, on the other hand…teach it all)
- Never makes you feel stupid asking questions
- Adapts exercises to your individual voice
- Does not make you feel less than for being new to singing
You should also look for a teacher who actually listens to your goals.
Maybe you want to audition for musical theatre.
Maybe you want to sing pop songs without straining.
Maybe you want to improve your confidence before karaoke night.
Maybe you have always wanted to sing and finally decided that waiting until you magically become fearless is not a practical plan, otherwise it’ll never happen.
All of those are great goals. The right online coach will get you there.
What Should You Sing in Your First Lesson?
Choose something you love and know well.
It does not need to be impressive. In fact, trying to choose the most difficult song you can possibly find is rarely helpful.
Your teacher needs to hear your natural habits, not watch you fight for your life through a song that was written for a completely different voice.
Pick something comfortable enough that you can focus on singing instead of remembering the words, surviving the high note, and questioning every decision that led you to this moment.
In other words: simple is best! Don’t overthink it!
Will Voice Lessons Make Me Sound Different?
The goal is not to change your natural voice.
Good training should help you sound more like yourself, but with greater ease, control, range, consistency, and confidence. I always say “ it’s you … .but enhanced!”
You may learn how to access sounds you have not used before. You may discover that notes you assumed were “too high” were actually being approached inefficiently. You may also discover that you have been carrying enough jaw tension to qualify as a dental emergency.
But the goal is not to turn every singer into the same singer.
Your voice should still sound like you when you’re with the right vocal coach.
How Often Should a Beginner Take Lessons?
Consistency matters more than perfection.
Weekly lessons are often ideal because they provide regular feedback and keep new habits moving forward. But every-other-week lessons can also work well for busy adults, students, or anyone working within a budget, so that is why I offer that option.
And yes, I see very good results with those that see me every other week!
Some beginners prefer to start with a small lesson package rather than committing to months of coaching immediately.
That can be a smart option.
A short package gives you time to:
- Meet the teacher
- Learn a few foundational exercises
- Work on a song
- See whether online lessons feel comfortable
- Decide what you would like to do next
You do not need to map out the next ten years of your singing career before booking lesson one.
The Most Important Thing to Remember
You are allowed to be a beginner.
You are allowed to crack (‘cause we all do. Yup. Accept that now)
You are allowed to miss notes.
You are allowed to forget the lyrics to a song you have heard 900 times ( We all do that, too!)
You are allowed to ask questions. In fact, PLEASE ask questions!
And here’s a biggie:
You are absolutely allowed to take voice lessons simply because singing makes you happy.
Online voice coaching should not feel scary, judgmental, or impossibly complicated. With the right teacher, it should feel supportive, practical, and fun. Because if singing isn’t enjoyable, why does ANY human do it????
Yes, we will work.
Yes, you will learn.
But no one needs to act like every warm-up is a Herculean task.
