Are You Searching for “Personalized Vocal Coaching”?

personalized vocal coaching

If you ARE, then you’re looking for a human that can provide real feedback, and real progress!

Let me break down the options out there for you as far as vocal training!

1. Private Voice Coaches with Online Booking

(This includes independent teachers)

This is the most direct and personalized way to book one-on-one voice coaching online.

What you get

  • Live Zoom lessons (or other online platform like Hangouts or FaceTime, sometimes I use those too)
  • Individual vocal assessment
  • Repertoire, technique, and style tailored to you and you only!
  • Ongoing feedback—not automated responses

This option is best for:
Adults, teens, and any singer who is serious about real improvement and are willing to put in the time to attend lessons and to practice in between.

What to look for:

  • Clear booking system that makes it easy to schedule lessons/coachings
  • Coach explains their approach/methods used (not buzzwords)
  • Option for single lessons  (green flag, so you can assess if they are a fit for you before you commit to more!)

While this may not be the approach of some of my colleagues, it’s my approach. I understand that not everyone has the time to schedule or pay for a full  semester of lessons, because…life. Vocal coaches that are flexible with their scheduling can offer a LOT to a singer that is serious, but also busy with other non-singing things!

2. Lesson Marketplaces

(Lessonface,Superprof, Virtu Academy )

These platforms let you search and book one-on-one lessons with different coaches from around the country if you would like online lessons, OR it allows you to search for vocal coaches that are more local if the platform offers in person as well (some, like Lessonface ,are all online lessons)

Pros

  • Easy comparison
  • Wide range of prices
  • Wide range of teacher expertise
  • Quick scheduling

Cons

  • No long-term continuity unless you commit to one teacher
  • “Personalized” depends entirely on the coach
  • Training can be inconsistent. Some (certainly not all!) of the vocal coaches are not that experienced or committed.

Good for: Testing online lessons for the first time to see if this format works for you

3. Music Schools Offering Online Lessons

Some traditional studios now offer Zoom lessons.

Pros

  • Structured programs
  • Established reputations
  • Very clear policies
  • Vetted instructors with teaching and performing experience

Cons

  • Often locked into large payments
  • Less flexible as far as times available ,or with reschedules and cancelations
  • Not always style-specific (they may not have teachers that are experts in your chosen  genre. For example, rock vocals are harder to find at such schools)

Good for: Students who want formal structure, like young beginner singers.

4. Why Apps Aren’t One-on-One Coaching

Ok..here comes the big reality check!

Apps can help with:

  • Pitch matching
  • Practice reminders

Apps cannot and never will:

  • Hear or SEE tension
  • Adjust YOUR  technique in real time
  • Respond to nerves, style, or emotional expression (singing is SO personal!)
  • Make you laugh 😉
  • Have a cute cat that may show up during your lesson if you’re lucky
  • Show off their outrageously cool Elvis or Barbie collection

Apps = supplementary tools
Vocal Coaches = coaching, as in ALL of it. Plus some of us are just more fun (shameless plug!)

So Where Should You Book? Decisions, Decisions!

If you want:

  • Real-time feedback
  • A coach who adapts to your voice, learning style, and personality
  • Flexibility and human connection
